The Waltham Boys & Girls Club announces Summer Camp Registration and Scholarship Applications

The Waltham Boys & Girls Club is currently accepting registrations for Summer Camp 2010 as of April 1st. This adventurous camp offers outdoor activities such archery, arts & crafts, hiking, boating, fishing, swimming, field games, scavenger hunts and much more! Weekly theme events will also take place during scheduled activity periods.  

Campers are transported daily from the Club to Hale Reservation located in Westwood. Camp is offered to youths ages 5 to 12. Throughout the summer, campers will spend some days offsite. In the event of a rainstorm, campers will spend the day at the Waltham Boys & Girls Club. 

Camp fees will be $195.00 per week per child. You can register for weekly sessions beginning June 28th through August 27th. A non- refundable deposit of $50.00 per child, per week is required to reserve a spot. Balances must be paid a prior to the start of the following session. The hours of operation are from 7:30am to 5:30pm.

We are offering scholarship applications for children attending Summer Camp. Due to the support of the Perpetual Benevolence Fund, we are offering $5,000.00 in camperships. These scholarships will benefit low income families who desire fun and enriching program opportunities for their children; you may request a scholarship application at our front desk along with a copy of our registration form. You must attach a copy of your 2009 Federal Income Tax Return for verification purposes. You may request to attend 1-2 weeks of camp at no cost.

You must fill out all the forms in their entirety to be considered for this scholarship. It is non-transferable, and cannot be used for additional costs such as Club membership or late pick up fees. This campership may not be exchanged for money or registration in any other Club programs. Any incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

**The first 50 campers to be paid in full will receive a summer camp back pack filled with supplies donated by Commonwealth Financial.

Fun Swim:

Waltham Boys & Girls Club offers Red Cross Learn to Swim Lesson
Level’s 1-6 and Parent and Child classes.

Parent and Child:
Ages: 6 months-5years old
Limit: None
Price: $55.00 for 6, 30 minute classes
In this class we focus on getting children used to the water. It is essentially an organized play session where we sing songs which introduce them to simple swimming skills. Such as blowing bubbles, kicking feet, and moving arms and overall having fun in the water. 

Preschool

Ages: 3-5

Limit: 5 (unless approved by the Aquatics Director)

Price: $55.00 for 6, 30 minute classes

This class is built for children who are ready to start learning the basic skills but aren’t quite old enough to participate in our lesson program. We start learning how to float, blow bubbles, kick, arm movement and work on dunking our heads. There are also games that we play which incorporate important swimming skills allowing them to learn and have fun at the same time.


P.A.L.Swim
 

P.A.L.Swim(Physical And Learning Support) is a group of peer buddies who befriend youth with disabilities, participate alongside them in aquatic activities. Classes are thirty minutes once a week for six weeks and service preschool and school aged children separately. The youth volunteers help children with disabilities learn swimming skills as well as help to increase their verbal and auditory skills.

Classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:00pm.

Cost: $55.00 ages 3-5

 $40.00 ages 6-18

 

Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills

Ages: 6-Up and Must be a current member

Limit: 6 (unless approved by the Aquatics Director)

Price: $40.00 for 6, 30 minute classes 

There are no pre requisites for this course. The objective of Level 1 is to help students feel comfortable in the water and enjoy water safely. In this level the swimmer learns elementary aquatic skills, such as floats and glides with kicks, breath control and treading water. Swimmers will build on to these skills as they progress through the six Learn-to-Swim levels.

 

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Ages: 6-Up and Must be a current member

Limit: 6 (unless approved by the Aquatics Director)

Price: $40.00 for 6, 30 minute classes 

All swimmers must have passed level 1 or completed an exit skills assessment test. The objective of level 2 is to give swimmers success with fundamental skills. Students learn to float without support and recover to a vertical position. Swimmers explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back which lay the foundations for future strokes. 


Level 3 Stroke Development

Ages: 6-Up and Must be a current member

Limit: 6 (unless approved by the Aquatics Director)

Price: $40.00 for 6, 30 minute classes 

All swimmers must have passed level 2 or completed an exit skills assessment test. The objective of Level 3 is to build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice. We teach the swimmers to coordinate the front and back crawl. We introduce elements of the butterfly and the fundamentals of treading water. Swimmers learn the rules for head-first entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from the side of the pool.

 

Level 4 Stroke Improvement

Ages: 6-Up and Must be a current member

Limit: 10

Price: $40.00 for 6, 30 minute classes

All swimmers must have passed level 3 or completed an exit skills assessment test. The objective of Level 4 is to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. We help the swimmers improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes for greater distances. Swimmers also continue to learn butterfly and elementary backstroke and are introduced to the breaststroke and elements of the sidestroke. We also start to introduce flip turns.

 

Level 5 Stroke Refinement

Ages: 6-Up and Must be a current member

Limit: 10

Price: $40.00 for 6, 30 minute classes

All swimmers must have passed level 4 or completed an exit skills assessment test. The objective of Level 5 is coordination and refinement of strokes. Swimmers refine their performance of all the strokes and increase their distances. Flip turns on the front and back are also introduced.

PAL Summer Basketball

Ages 13-17; Monday & Wednesday 6:30, 7:30 & 8:30pm.  Games are played at Kenndy Middle School.  All players must be a member of the Waltham Boys & Girls Club to participate.

 

 Summer Baseball:

June 22-August 5, 2010

This league is totally free and the membership fee will be waived.  Games are held Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30pm. & 6:00pm.  All games are held at Yetten Field next to Leary Field.  Games will not go past an hour and half due to timee restraint on field. 

Summer Gym Schedule:

This summer we will have a rotating schedule from program area to program area.  The schedule will be as follows:

Monday-Friday:

12-1pm.  Lunch in games room

1-2pm.  Wanna Play MLB in the Gym

2-3pm.  Computer Lab

3-4pm. Games Room, Fun Swim and Gym

Open daily the technology center is equipped with internet connected computers to allow members to play games,
surf the net and research homework topics.

* Computers are equipped with a firewall safety system which blocks specific sites and inappropriate content.

The Waltham Boys & Girls Club's After School Program is a fully state-licensed program that is structured to develop and implement programs and activities that prepare youth for success.  members are encouraged to participate in all 5 core areas of programming: character & leadership development, education & career development, health & life skills, the arts, sports, fitness & recreation.  This program is offered to all youth ages 6-12.  Transportation is available to participants who attend Waltham Schools.

SNACK:  A 3:30pm snack is provided daily to After School Program members.  The snacks offered are nutritious, filling and meet the Massachusetts Department of Early Education food standards.  Snack is composed of two daily components: milk or 100% fruit juice and vegetables, fruit or grains/breads.
